Dr Ide Delargy has been a practising GP since 1986 and has practised in both the UK and Ireland. She is a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners of Ireland (MICGP) and also a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in London (MRCGP). She has a special interest in the area of substance misuse and has been the Director of the Substance Misuse Programme at the ICGP since 1998. In this role she has chaired an interagency working group on Drug Related Deaths which reported in 2007 and also chaired the working group which produced best practice guidelines on “Working with Opiate Users in the Primary Care Setting”. She has represented the ICGP on the DOHC Benzodiazepine Expert Group which produced best practice guidelines on benzodiazepine prescribing in 2003. She is also the National GP Co-ordinator for the HSE Addiction Service.
In 2007, she was appointed Chairperson of the Sick Doctor Scheme which provides assessment, referral and support for doctors with substance misuse problems. Dr Delargy has co-ordinated a group of practitioners in developing a proposal for a Physician Health Programme in Ireland.
